The Birth of a Band...
Chapter I - The Story
The story? Ahh... the story. Well, after my many failed band attempts, I finally kinda just bumped into Robin and we started to jam. Right away, we could feel the Magic Connection between us. So we tried out a bassist, a few guitarists, and one or two singers, but none seemed to work. It seemed hopeless... But soon, after much though, I remembered Troy. We were in our first band together and I guess it just never occured to me that Troy could be a possibility. But we started to jam and I was very, very surprised. He had been in the High School Jazz Band and had gotten very good. With his theory background, we recruited him... and he worked out perfect.
Now, on the side, Robin had been playin' with a, should I say...., side project. They were these guys called Gnawtism... and Corey had offered to sing with us, if the case ever arrived that we needed someone. So Robin convinced me to let him try out. I was blown clear down the street... Not only could he sing, he could play. This was exactly what we needed, and we were complete.
Chapter II - The Name
The name? ahh... the name. OK, this may get a bit confusing, so just stick with me... A friend had gotten in a fight with a few rednecks from the Brainerd High School student lounge (this is a whole story in itself, and if you lived in Brainerd, you'd probably already know it, so we won't get into that one) things got a little tense.Me and Robin, bein' pegged as this guy's friend, which we were (and still are,) were teased a bit. I'd walk through the lounge and the rednecks would scream out "PONYTAIL!" I admit, it did upset me - but I didn't act upon it. I had also heard that they had began callin' Robin "Mushroom Head" and I sorta filed it away.
Later that month, Robin, Robin's parents and I were sittin' 'round his dinner table throwing out names. Some dorky ones were out (but that was mostly my fault) and eventually "Mushponies" was thrown out and I loved it. Mike (Robin's dad) came up with "The Magic Mushponies" and it rang like jingle bells.
Now the magic part, that was explained later. To us, magic is not the Magician at the birthday party, or the tricks he uses, but the feeling you get when you see the tricks. It can be a mood-changing symbol, such as a peace sign, or music that makes you change the way you think, or feel.
